Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day

In celebration of WorldWide Pinhole Day (WPPD), CPAC presents a family-friendly pinhole event at Rocky Mountain College of Art Design's campus in Lakewood. This is a camera-building, photo-taking, and print-developing event to celebrate and create one-of-a-kind images.

Ways to participate:

• Pinhole Workshop 10am-12:30pm: In-depth training and camera-building session lead by Ashlae Shepler, pinhole-camera master; attendees get materials to convert a cigar box into a pinhole camera. You can also bring your own objects to create a pinhole camera. All attendees will learn exposure and development times using direct-positive silver gelatin paper. This workshop is appropriate for any level photographer and uses traditional processing chemicals; no experience is required. This is a family-friendly class, however for general safety, a parent should accompany children under 15 years old. Learn historical foundations for pinhole photography and join others in creating silver gelatin prints with handmade pinhole cameras!

• Shoot & Print 1-3:30pm: Free and open to the public! Aim your camera and print your picture in a traditional darkroom using your own pinhole camera and paper. Join the fun - come shoot and print with us. Volunteers and instructors will be available to help you through the process.  Wear an apron or shirt that can get wet. 4x5 positive paper will be available for sale.

   Prints will be scanned on-site and uploaded to the Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day website, pinholeday.org.

FAQ

1. What is pinhole photography?

A pinhole camera is a simple camera without a lens and with a single small aperture, a pinhole – effectively a light-proof box with a small hole in one side. Light from a scene passes through this single point and projects an inverted image on the opposite side of the box. (from Wikipedia).

It is completely dark on all the other sides of the box including the side where the point is created. This part is usually painted black, but black boxes are also used for this purpose. There is also a thin screen which looks like a projector sheet, and is put in between the dark side adjacent to the pinhole.
